Since 2014

The citizen initiative ElectriCITY Innovation was founded in 2014 and operates in Hammarby Sjöstad in Stockholm.

We act locally
but think globally

ElectriCITY Innovation’s work concretely involves translating the EU goals and the Paris Climate Agreement into local energy and environmental initiatives by introducing smart and renewable energy, sustainable transportation, energy-efficient buildings, and digital urban development. Hammarby Sjöstad serves as a testbed and demonstration district for new sustainable environmental solutions that can be replicated in other districts and municipalities, both in Sweden and abroad.

Within ElectriCITY Innovation, numerous sustainability and environmental projects are ongoing in close collaboration with municipalities, authorities, businesses, research organizations, and universities. ElectriCITY has around 80 members and partners from industry, research institutes, universities, and municipalities. Membership offers, among other things:

  • Access to testing environments — Members have the opportunity to test and develop their products and services in real-world settings.
  • Networking and collaboration — Members can collaborate with businesses, researchers, and authorities to drive innovation in sustainable urban development.
  • Visibility and marketing — Through membership, companies can showcase their innovations to a broader audience, including policymakers and the public.
  • Knowledge exchange — Members can access the latest research and technological developments in the field of sustainable and smart cities.
  • Funding opportunities — Members can receive support in identifying and applying for funding for their innovation projects through various public and private grants.

Members of ElectriCITY Innovation also become part of the Stockholm Green Innovation District (SGID). This is Stockholm’s new growth area for innovation and sustainability, developed in collaboration between the City of Stockholm, Nacka Municipality, large and small businesses, civil society, and research organizations such as KTH, IVL, and RISE. SGID, extending from Årsta in the west to Nacka center in the east, serves as a testbed for green innovations with a focus on energy efficiency and climate neutrality.

ElectriCITY Innovation is a non-profit economic association founded in 2014. The organization, based in Hammarby Sjöstad, Stockholm, aims to create a climate-neutral district by 2030.

The chairperson is Monica Axell, who is also a business developer at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden. She is actively involved in international cooperation within the EU, Mission Innovation, and the IEA, and leads the IEA Heat Pump Centre. Allan Larsson, former chairperson and founder, now serves as a senior advisor.

ElectriCITY aims to lead the way in smart energy, sustainable transportation, the sharing economy/recycling, and research. Through the electrification and digitalization of our projects within the Hammarby Sjöstad 2.0 testbed, we hope to achieve the climate targets set in the Paris Agreement for 2050 as early as 2030.

Members and partners can participate in multiple projects, and it is through interactions between members that new collaborations and projects emerge.

We organize two ElectriCITY Days per year, during which we delve into relevant climate and sustainability issues. These events cover both future visions and current projects, exploring future scenarios and challenges for which we can collaboratively develop and test business-oriented solutions. Members and partners participate, sharing experiences and insights. An essential part of these days is networking and discussions, offering valuable opportunities to establish connections.
