Bike2Green

The bicycle as a mode of transport has positive effects on the environment and climate, public health, the economy, and accessibility.

Cycling in everyday life

In the spring of 2024, the EU adopted a European Cycling Declaration. The declaration is a milestone for cycling as a mode of transport, and the EU emphasizes that cycling contributes to many positive effects on the environment and climate, public health, the economy, and accessibility. The declaration is very concrete, containing 36 commitments across eight areas, and it highlights that cycling should be integrated at all levels of transport planning.

Bike2Green is a European innovation and research project that aims to encourage more people to choose active mobility, such as walking and cycling in everyday life, thereby supporting the green transition toward more sustainable transport and active travel. Funded by the EU and coordinated by KTH (Royal Institute of Technology), the project emphasizes the importance of community engagement and environmental awareness.

The project aims to promote daily use of the bicycle as a mode of transport, particularly for commuting to work and school. Through a game-based mileage reimbursement system, the project hopes to inspire change. Participants can earn mileage credits that provide vouchers worth up to 550 SEK per month, which can be used in local stores in Stockholm.

Participating Stockholmers have applied to join, and the project has selected participants to ensure a balanced distribution of gender, age, and geographic areas within the city. A total of 1,500 Stockholm residents will have the opportunity to take part in Bike2Green. To participate, individuals must download an app and pick up a kit with a GPS tracker (shown below) that attaches to their bike to measure the number of kilometers cycled.
