Charge at home

If there are no charging stations for electric cars, interest is low, but if the infrastructure is in place, interest in getting an electric car increases.

Electric Car Charging
for Everyone!

Charge at home is primarily about increasing the number of electric vehicles in order to reduce carbon emissions on our roads.

After organizing several test drives of electric cars, we realized that more charging stations were needed to enable the electrification of the electric car fleet.

For several years, ElectriCITY has been working to ensure there is charging capacity in garages so that the development towards more electric cars is not hindered. This has been done through informational meetings, technical support, and group procurement. Today, there are over a thousand charging points in the garages of Hammarby Sjöstad, as well as more than 30 public charging stations, including fast chargers. This probably makes us the most charging-dense city district in Sweden.

Share an electric car with your neighbors

In Hammarby Sjöstad, several car-sharing services are available on the streets. It’s a convenient form of “car ownership” for those who don’t use a car every day.

We took this a step further and tested a setup with a smaller electric car pool in one of the housing cooperative’s own garages. Three households shared an electric car with a charging station in the garage. The car, which was serviced and maintained by a company, could be easily booked via an app.

Cycling with electric power

We have also tested electric bikes here in Hammarby Sjöstad. For example, we have lent electric bikes to residents for short periods. The bikes were used for commuting as well as for leisure. The results have been very positive. Many became fond of the electric bike and set off on long trips, distances they would never have covered otherwise. And all at a comfortable pace and in regular clothes.

Smart charging
without increasing power demand

With centralized control of charging stations and demand-responsive charging, it is possible to avoid increasing the property’s electricity subscription. In Hammarby Sjöstad’s largest housing cooperative, The Village, all 231 parking spaces in the garage are equipped with individual charging points. This has not resulted in a higher power demand in the property. The solution is a smart digital system with centralized charging technology, where 29 cars share three chargers, and a smart app controls who gets to charge first, based on when the car is needed next.

The Village’s evaluation criteria were scalability, service, platform, control, and cost-effectiveness, and these were the conclusions drawn:

  • Invest in a system with a long technical lifespan that resembles other electrical systems already in the building.
  • The cars of the future will be electric, so it’s best to be prepared.
  • Choose a solution that handles the challenges with electrical power in the property.
  • Build the entire system at once to maximize support from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket)*.

*“Ladda bilen” is a grant administered by Naturvårdsverket. It can provide your housing cooperative/organization with funding for costs such as labor, materials, digging, installation, and similar. The grant covers up to 50% of the costs, with a maximum amount of 15,000 SEK per charging point.
