Trans-PED

The EU project “Transforming Cities through Positive Energy Districts” aims to develop sustainable urban districts.

The Path to Net Zero

In the Trans-PED project (Transforming Cities through Positive Energy Districts), the goal is to develop a governance model that can enable transformative changes in cities. The project focuses on creating Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) — urban districts that, over the course of a year, achieve net-zero energy import and net-zero CO₂ emissions.

Through collaboration between European cities and research institutions, energy-positive solutions are promoted to reduce emissions, increase energy efficiency, and improve quality of life in urban environments.

Positive energy districts are an effective strategy to reduce carbon emissions while simultaneously creating more resilient and livable cities.

Achieving positive energy districts requires a long-term transformation in city planning and structure. A positive energy district integrates the built environment, production, consumption, and mobility to reduce energy use while producing the remaining energy locally. The goal of the Trans-PED project is to develop a new governance model that can help municipalities and other stakeholders create these areas. The EU aims to support the planning and implementation of one hundred such districts by 2025, as energy is a central factor in reaching climate neutrality. Positive energy districts thus become an essential tool in the transition toward sustainable cities.

TOOLKIT FOR POSITIVE ENERGY DISTRICTS
The project includes five districts in Austria, Belgium, and Sweden (Brunnshög in Lund and Hammarby Sjöstad in Stockholm). The goal is to leverage experiences and knowledge from these districts to jointly develop a governance model and toolkit for positive energy districts.

By participating in Trans-PED, ElectriCITY Innovation contributes by sharing experiences and insights from projects in Hammarby Sjöstad with other cities and regions in Europe that also aim to develop positive energy districts. This demonstrates ElectriCITY’s important role in driving innovation and implementing sustainable solutions in energy production and use, supporting the EU’s goal of creating carbon-neutral cities.
