Transport

The purpose is to reduce emissions of fossil fuels by investing in electric cars, charging stations at home, setting up car pools and introducing environmentally friendly transport in Hammarby Sjöstad.

We start from the citizens’ needs for transport, goods and services and how these best fit into the city’s transport system. Where digitalisation can enable sustainable transport of people with self-driving cars, where goods can be delivered to smart properties that can act as nodes for transport, where we do not have to drive or own our own cars.

Local goals / schedule
By 2030:

  • The city’s transport system will be optimized for citizens’ logistics needs through digital tools
  • 80% of the privately owned vehicle fleet must be climate-neutral (eg 40% electric cars, 35% charging hybrids and 5% fuel cell vehicles) and 10% of the vehicle fleet must be electric hybrids (non-rechargeable)
  • all rechargeable vehicles must have access to their own charging station and there will be at least 250 public charging points
  • the number of private vehicles must have decreased by 10%
  • the public transport in Hammarby Sjöstad must be climate-neutral (metro, tram, buses and ferries) and all taxi journeys to and from Hammarby Sjöstad must only take place by electric taxi and / or shared transport services.
  • transport services to and from Hammarby Sjöstad must be fossil-free

Activities
The Transport project includes the following activities / projects:

  • Charge at home
The project works for a faster and more efficient expansion of charging infrastructure. Joint procurement of EV charging stations and installation work has resulted in cheap and smart home charging.
  • Car pools
Local car pools can be formed either together with an existing commercial player or by creating a smaller car pool between neighbors.
  • Try an electric bike
Through cooperation with bicycle manufacturers, motorists tested commuting with electric bicycles to and from work for a few weeks, which led to new travel habits.
  • Informal 0-zone
Housing associations in Sjöstan have demanded a conversion to electric operation to and from properties. This is accomplished by means of framework agreements and joint procurements of transports which results in a kind of informal 0-zone.
  • Taxi 0-zone
Housing associations and companies have registered their addresses with one or more taxi companies and demanded that fares should primarily be carried out with electric cars.
  • V2G – Vehicle to grid
Taking advantage of the opportunity to use the electric car as an extra battery storage for your own electricity production. Electricity from the property’s solar cells is stored in the car batteries and then used by the property in the event of a power shortage.
  • Electric and self-driving taxi service
A fully functional IT structure (5G) opens up for self-driving electric cars / minibuses. These can complement existing local traffic.
  • Electrification of public transport
ElectriCITY has presented a bus and boat plan for the traffic region council in Stockholm. The plan suggests an electrification of Stockholm’s bus traffic and ferry traffic.
  • Transhipment hubs
Here, goods are reloaded from larger fossil-fueled transport vehicles to smaller electric vehicles for local distribution.

Current situation
Through joint procurements, the number of charging points for electric cars has increased greatly in recent years. In the case of joint procurement for transport services, a framework agreement has been concluded between some forty housing associations, Veolia and Suez respectively. Taxi 0-zone has been in place for almost two years.

Comment
The investment in charging stations has resulted in us having about 500 EV charging stations in Sjöstaden’s garage. This probably makes us ”the most charged-up” district in Sweden. The framework agreements concluded for transport services have also yielded very good results, and we see that group procurements with framework agreements are an effective way forward to achieve a fossil-free district.
We are now taking the next step by taking a holistic approach to our citizens’ logistics and transport needs. By starting from the citizens’ desired transports and adapting the system to these, we get better user-based solutions.
